Application time again

Its the time of the year when all the really good opportunities appear on Axis, Ludlow Open, Jerwood Drawing Prize, Boston Drawing Prize..trying to get all the photographs taken and the forms filled in on time..seems to be 30% studio time , 70% office time at the minute.

The Basement Project.

On 1st May, Matter Lumina opens at The Milkwood Gallery in Roath, Cardiff. The exhibition, curated by Kathryn Campbell Dodd and Seren Stacey is primarily concerned with LIGHT. I was given the basement as my space, and asked to re-create my Strings Installation.

Yesterday I installed my piece.

The Basement Stairwell.

The Basement Stairwell.

For those of you who will not see the show, I will attempt to describe.

The basement is accessed along a narrow corridor and down a very tight set of stairs. It’s  claustrophobic, but this suits the piece. It’s an angular shaped room, with low ceilings. My grids, strings and projector soon filled the space. I had the distinct impression that I was an extra in the film Being John Malkovitch, that the stair way is the portal into another dimension. The work is a tight fit, but I’m really pleased with the way that it looks.

In Conwy, I built the piece out of doors, it reacted to the weather and the ambient light that spilled in through the top of the tower, in the basement is looks completely different. Its suspended. It doesn’t move. The light scatters over the surface the same way, but creates a different atmosphere. I think the stairwell, the low ceilings and the restricted space to view, humanises the piece. If that makes any sense

The show is an interesting collection of work from 12 different artists. If you’re in Roath between 1st and the 18th, please go along to see it.

Tongue Stuck to my Teeth!

Well, the talk was absolutely terrifying, but at the same time very rewarding. Its always good to look  over past work and revisit. I got so nervous that my mouth became so dry that my tongue stuck to my teeth.. Strange sensation. Anyway, back in my studio today , finishing of some new work for Gathered in New York. very Exciting..but why does paint take so long to dry..

Stumbled across a new Art Networking site that looks quite interesting, purely by chance via a tweet from another artist. Its called Artstack…I have applied to join..Very mysterious..

But heres the link to my work as seen on a blog about the new site. Strange to know its there but not able to see because I have to be approved..
