Chatting The Blues

"Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished."

This quote from the Tao Te Ching highlights the importance of patience and trust in the natural order of things. In "Woman in a Polar Night," Ritter similarly emphasises the need to surrender to the rhythms of the natural world and let go of the need for control.

I think that’s why I love them both so much.

This week I spoke to Rebecca Morrill, the Arts Editor at Phaidon Books, as part of my digital In Conversations to accompany my Solo Exhibition at Oriel Davies Gallery. We had a very generous and relaxed conversation about her own writing, objects that she treasures from her childhood, and her obsession with blue. A colour that I am often drawn too in my studio.

She asked me lots of questions about my own practise, and my upcoming exhibition.

All of the conversations will be available to watch soon on the Oriel Davies website too.

I’m busy moving the large works down into the clean space in my studio, so they can be viewed easier and all together with space to breath. I’ve really loved working on such a huge scale. It’s been challenging, often making me cry, but I am so pleased that I pushed on through the difficulty.

The work is looking so good all together in the space.

I’ve also started rereading two of my favourite books - Lao Tzu - Tao Te Ching, and A Woman in a Polar Night by Christian Ritter. My foundation tutor gave me the Chinese text as a present on my 17th Birthday - one of my favourite books.
